2001 Nuits St-Georges, Chaine Carteaux, Premier Cru, Domaine Henri Gouges

This is my first entry to the blog that I started to capture my experience living in New York. New York is one of the best place in the world to find great food and wine, which I enjoy very much.

Few nights ago, I finally decided to open a bottle of Burgundy wine. This is a bottle that I acquired in March 2005 through The Singaure Red Wine Clue of K&L Wines. It was in the cellar for about a year in Tokyo and brought it back with me to NY.

The wine is from the village of Nuits St-Georges, which is in Cote D'Or region. Nuits St-Georges has no Grand Crus but has 27 Premier Cru vineyards. Domaine Henri Gouges is well known for producing some of the best wines in Nuits St-Georges.

This wine is from a "parcel of the ChĂȘnes Coteaux was planted half a century ago. Superbly placed at the edge of some woods, at the top of a slope, where gravel and other small stones are plentiful, the vine will draw nourishment from deep in the earth and give to the wines a superb finesse, and great tenderness."

The wine had the aroma of cherry with a hint of earth. It started out fine with fruity flavor and the right amount of acidity. Elegance of red Burgandy showed as you would expect. But it dropped off from there, lacking substance. It sort of fell flat. After one night, it was not any better. Somewhat disappointed. Perhaps a couple of more years of cellar might help.
